Dr. Baumgarten Focused on Sports Injuries
Dr. Keith Baumgarten knows sports, having competed in athletics since his childhood. He knows medicine, having graduated from one of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools, among other achievements. His two passions have become his livelihood.
Dr. Baumgarten is a surgeon with Orthopedic Institute, specializing in sports medicine. Sports medicine entails the prevention and treatment of disorders and injuries related to sports and recreational activity.
Baumgarten sees athletes of all skill levels and ages who are sidelined because of injuries. Additionally, he oversees the care of players with the Sioux Falls Stampede as head team physician, and serves as the team physician for Dakota State University athletics.
A native of Smithtown, N.Y., Baumgarten played soccer, basketball, baseball, and track as a child, and in college played rugby and was captain of his soccer team. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and went on to complete advanced fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery.
He was an associate physician for the New York Mets and his medical training included experience with the St. Louis Rams, Blues, and Cardinals. He provided preventative care and nonsurgical and surgical treatment for these athletes.
Baumgarten still enjoys participating in sports, as well as reading and spending time with his wife and children.
