Dr. Carlson: 25 Years of Patient Care
In his 25 years serving Sioux Falls and surrounding communities at Orthopedic Institute, Dr. Walter Carlson has helped younger and older patients overcome pain and debilitation, and resume an active lifestyle.
Dr. Carlson joined Orthopedic Institute in 1983. He has specialized training and special interest in three areas of orthopedics: adult spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, and total joint replacement.
Spine
Dr. Carlson provides the most advanced spine care. For example, he performs artificial disc replacement surgery when necessary to replace a degenerative disc. And he uses the new X Stop implant when it is the best option to treat patients with spinal stenosis.
Pediatric Orthopedics
Dr. Carlson has advanced fellowship training in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis. He takes pride in evaluating and diagnosing children’s injuries.
Total Joint Replacement
Nonsurgical treatment of osteoarthritis is always explored first, but Dr. Carlson performs knee and hip replacement surgery when necessary to overcome pain and debilitation. He is trained in one of the latest advancements in knee surgery, the gender specific knee for women. The prosthesis is smaller and can be aligned to match a woman’s anatomy, providing a better fit in her joint and potentially a greater outcome from the surgery.
Dr. Carlson sees patients at clinics in Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Mitchell, and at these clinics in Iowa: Rock Rapids, Rock Valley, and Sibley.
