The Team Physician’s Role

The past decade has seen a tremendous increase in sports medicine care not only on the professional level but also on the collegiate and high school levels.  Today, team physicians are a common site on the sidelines and are increasingly present at team practices, in addition to the games. They take care of the athletes on and off the field.

From pre-participation screening and managing injuries on the field, to injury prevention and rehabilitation, it is the ultimate responsibility of the team physician to coordinate all elements of the athlete’s well being to ensure his/her safe participation in team athletics. Team physicians have special training, education, and a special interest in evaluating and treating sports-related injuries.

When not with their team, these physicians see patients of all ages and competitive levels.
