Dr. Rothman: Renowned Surgeon

An orthopaedic surgeon and founder of the Rothman Institute, Dr. Richard Rothman has become one of the Delaware Valley’s most trusted and renowned joint replacement specialists.

Dr. Rothman founded the Rothman Institute in 1970. Since then, he has headed a group of orthopaedic specialists who have provided area residents with expert, compassionate care and the most advanced medicine available.

Dr. Rothman takes a special interest and is skilled in reconstruction and replacement of the knee and hip. Recognized in national publications as one of the country’s premiere orthopaedic surgeons in joint replacement, he has published 13 textbooks, more than 200 research papers, and serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Arthroplasty.

Dr. Rothman performed the first hip replacement in Philadelphia 40 years ago. Today, a hip replacement he helped design is the most used hip implant in the country.

Joint replacement surgery treats one of orthopaedics’ most common diseases, osteoarthritis. After surgery, patients of Dr. Rothman often experience a rapid return to an active lifestyle, sometimes after only weeks of rehabilitation. His patients’ return to such sports as long distance running and skiing reflects Dr. Rothman’s commitment to quicker recovery and personal interests in the same sports.

“Dr. Rothman has touched many, many lives over the years,” says Mike West, CEO of the Rothman Institute and long-time friend and colleague. “Through his expert skill as a surgeon, he has helped relieve his patients of pain and return them to an active lifestyle.”

A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Rothman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He trained and received a doctorate in anatomy at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University. Today, he practices at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and sees patients at the Rothman Institute clinics in Center City, King of Prussia, and Egg Harbor Township, N.J.
