Hip Surgery Helps N.J. Dad

Osteoarthritis hampered Michael Dillon’s ability to keep up with his third-grade son. But hip resurfacing surgery, designed for younger patients, was the remedy for the 46 year old from Northfield, N.J.

Dillon has been active all of his life until his 30s when he experienced pain from wear and tear of his left hip. He underwent total joint hip replacement surgery. Six years later, Dillon needed his right hip replaced, as well. He didn’t want to give up his active lifestyle as a recreational athlete and coach.

This time, Dr. Fabio Orozco of the Rothman Institute recommended hip resurfacing. A new option that is ideal for those under 60, hip resurfacing allowed Tour de France winner Floyd Landis to return to cycling so quickly.

Hip resurfacing replaces only the worn surfaces of the hip joint and preserves more bone, unlike traditional joint replacement. A metal cap is then fitted over the top of the resurfaced ball. Dr. Orozco uses the Cormet Hip Resurfacing System.

Earlier this year Dillon underwent hip resurfacing surgery, and after only three weeks he returned to work with greater flexibility in his hip and less pain. He now bikes and coaches street hockey, basketball, and baseball.

Dr. Orozco is a hip and knee replacement specialist. He sees patients in Egg Harbor Township and Manahawkin.
