What Is Anterior Hip Replacement?

A new approach to hip replacements has changed the way surgeons perform the procedure. Anterior hip replacement surgery requires the surgeon to access the joint from the front of the hip, instead of from the side or rear, as it is done traditionally. Performing the hip replacement in this fashion means that the muscles attached to the hip do not need to be cut; they can simply be moved aside instead.

Dr. Kareem G. Sobky, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Louis Orthopedic Institute says, “Patients who undergo this type of replacement often heal quicker, have less pain during recovery, enjoy shorter hospital stays after surgery, and, in some cases, are up and walking again the same day.”

Dr. Sobky is one of the first surgeons in the St. Louis area who is trained in performing the anterior hip replacement procedure. “I was very excited to train for this procedure. My experience in arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgeries has helped me perfect my technique for anterior hip replacements,” says Dr. Sobky.
