Coping with Chronic Pain

Numerous bone and joints injuries can leave us with chronic pain. Treating this pain can be challenging because the precise source of the pain can be hard to determine and sometimes it can take several types of treatment options before the pain subsides.

Determining what types of treatment are successful depends on the injury and the individual. Chronic pain may be the result of arthritis, back or neck pain, or a severe sprain. Eventually physical therapy or even surgery may be necessary to bring relief.

If pain persists for two to three months, it’s best to see an orthopedic physician for an evaluation. But before then, steps can be taken to reduce the pain and resume activity.

Exercise regularly. Find an activity you enjoy and one that doesn’t cause too much pain, such as swimming, walking, or biking. Regular exercise helps your immune system fight illness and injury.

Eat smart. Make sure you are getting enough vitamins such as Vitamin B and Vitamin D.

Get enough sleep. A lack of rest can exacerbate the pain.

Use pain relievers. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can provide temporary relief.

Other treatment options considered by a doctor include physical therapy and other nonsurgical methods that may include cortisone injections and electrical stimulation.
