With spring around the corner, more runners will soon hit the streets and bike paths. Whether you’re a casual runner or training for a marathon, injuries are always a possibility considering the toll on a runner’s joints.
Dr. Amy Stromwall, a sports medicine specialist at Summit Orthopedics and avid runner, sees many runners who come to her with pain. Recently, she says, she’s evaluated a high number of patients with low back, knee, and hip pain.
Pain and injuries related to running have numerous causes. One common cause is improper technique.
“Most runners, especially women, rely on their quadriceps and hip flexors in order to run,” says Dr. Stromwall. “Ideally, they should use their entire legs, especially the glutes and hamstrings. Proper technique entails a much more balanced approach.”
To help treat and prevent running injuries, Summit Orthopedics offers a runner’s injuries assessment program. The program includes video analysis and study of a person’s running motion, routine, and running shoes, and how these impact muscles and joints.
Recommendations based on this analysis often include strengthening, flexibility, and stretching exercises.
