What to Eat for Strong and Healthy Bones

Regardless of age, maintaining strong bones is an essential part of preventing bone diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis from occurring. Find out what to eat and what to avoid with these helpful suggestions from Sierra Pacific Orthopedics.

“It is never too late or too early to make dietary changes that will improve your bone health,” says Dr. Gopi Kasturi, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics. “Incorporating certain foods into your daily diet can help protect you from harmful bone diseases.”

  • Eat fruits and vegetables — Foods filled with vitamin C, such as red peppers and oranges, will provide the structure for your bones.

  • Consume low-fat dairy products — Increasing your vitamin D intake is one of the best ways to strengthen bones.

  • Eat healthy protein — Soy, beans, oats, and peanut butter are all good options.

Avoid consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, coffee, and soda, which are all commonly associated with weak bones. Incorporating exercises such as swimming, jogging, cycling, and minimal-weight bearing exercises into your lifestyle can also promote bone strength and overall health.
