What You Need to Know About Concussions

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, often disrupting normal brain function. Concussions can also occur as a result of a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

“Most people with a concussion recover quickly and fully,” says Dr. Rod S. Kraft, sports medicine doctor at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics. “However, some symptoms can last for days, weeks, or even longer.”

Recovery is generally slower among teens, young adults, and older adults. If you have experienced a concussion, you are at a higher risk of suffering a future concussion. You may also experience a longer recovery process after experiencing a second concussion.

If you think you or someone you know has suffered a concussion, check for:

  • Trouble thinking and remembering
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches and eye strain
  • Changes in emotion and mood
  • Difficulty sleeping

Some signs appear right away, while others may not be noticed for days or even months after a concussion.

There are many ways that you can prevent concussions. Making sure you are properly equipped when playing a sport, wearing a seat belt in your car, and using the proper seat for your child in the car are key to preventing concussions.
