Dr. Murphy’s Shoulder Repair Research Study

The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery have published articles by some of the leading orthopedists from around the world. This is continued with the publication of Dr. Todd P. Murphy’s recent research study, which put rotator cuff repairs to the test.

The purpose of the research study by Dr. Murphy, sports medicine specialist at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron, was to test the timing of rotator cuff repairs. The study found that rotator cuff repairs are best conducted within four months after the initial injury, regardless of the size of the tear.

“To regain full use of your shoulder, it is important to receive proper treatment within the first four months after the injury,” says Dr. Murphy. “While larger tears are more difficult to repair, significant pain relief can be achieved.”

The majority of rotator cuff tears are as a result of degenerative causes, which are a common source of shoulder pain. This study examined acute, traumatic rotator cuff tears, which only account for 8 percent of the total number of rotator cuff injuries.
