Is Hip Arthroscopy the Right Procedure for You?

During activities such as running, jumping, and twisting, the hip joint may experience forces up to five times your body weight. Both repetitive overuse and direct trauma can cause injury to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage within and surrounding the hip joint. If you’re suffering from hip pain but do not have significantly damaged tissue from arthritis, the hip doctors at Southern California Orthopedic Institute may recommend hip arthroscopy surgery.

During a minimally invasive hip arthroscopy surgery, a hip doctor is able to treat pain in the structure of your hip joint that may be caused by labral tears, loose bodies, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), or snapping hip.

“During a hip arthroscopy procedure, a small camera, called an arthroscope, is inserted into your hip joint,” explains Dr. Carlos A. Guanche, hip arthroscopy surgeon at Southern California Orthopedic Institute. “This camera gives me a clear view of your hip joint, allowing me to guide miniature surgical instruments through your joint, repairing any tears or damage to your hip.”

Through the use of an arthroscope, orthopedic surgeons are often able to address problems that were previously undiagnosed and untreated.
