Football Kickoffs Have Highest Risk of Severe Injuries

Football injuries are most severe at the beginning of a game or during kickoff, according to a recent study.  When injuries from the beginning of the game, middle of the game, and end of the game were compared, those injuries sustained at the beginning of the game were found to be more severe and often included concussions.

Research suggests that these injuries are more severe when the intensity of a game is at its highest, often during kickoff or during the beginning of the game. Competition is often fiercer and this contributes to more severe injuries.

Thirty-three percent of injuries that occurred during kickoff were severe, and 20 percent of those were concussions.

According to the study conducted by researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, the beginning of the game accounted for 16 percent of injuries. This is compared to 54 percent occurring during the middle of the game, and 30 percent at the end of the game or during overtime.
