Avoid Knee Injury

Exercising is an essential part of staying active and healthy, but it can also lead to injury. Here are some tips from our doctors to lower the risk of a knee injury.

Wear the Right Shoes for the Activity
It is important to wear the proper shoes for the activity, so your athletes' feet and knees have the support they need. Make sure to replace worn out shoes as well.

Focus on Form
Bad form is one of the easiest ways to be injured while exercising. Whether it is running, playing a sport with jumping, or lifting weights, have your athletes focus on using the correct form to reduce the risk of injury.

Increase Intensity Slowly
It is recommended to never increase the intensity of workouts more than 10 percent per week. Increasing your workouts slowly allows the body time to adjust and prevents overtraining.

Know When to Rest
Rest days are important to give the body time to rest and rebuild. Tell your athletes not to play or exercise through knee pain, as this can make an injury worse. If an athlete is suffering from knee pain that does not go away, he or she should consult with an orthopedic doctor.

If one of your athletes is injured, have him or her call (559) 256-5200 to schedule an appointment with one of our sports medicine specialists at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics.
