What to Eat for Strong and Healthy Bones

Regardless of age, maintaining strong bones is an essential part of preventing bone diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis from occurring. Find out what you and your athletes should eat and what you should avoid with these helpful suggestions from our experts.

It is never too late or too early to make dietary changes that will improve bone health. Incorporating certain foods into a daily diet can help protect against harmful bone diseases.

  • Eat fruits and vegetables – Foods filled with vitamin C such as red peppers and oranges will provide the structure for your bones.

  • Consume low-fat dairy products – Increasing your vitamin D and calcium intake is one of the best ways to strengthen bones.

  • Eat healthy protein – Soy, beans, oats, lean meats, and peanut butter are all good options.

You and your athletes should avoid consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, coffee, soda, and salt, which are all commonly associated with weak bones. Incorporating exercises such as swimming, jogging, cycling, and weight-bearing exercises can also promote bone strength and overall health.

If one of your athletes wants to learn more about bone health, have him or her schedule an appointment with one of our experts at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics at (559) 256-5200.
