Live Your Dream

Stay Safe This Winter

During the winter, the doctors at Sports Medicine North see an increase in patient injuries like fractures, concussions, sprains, and strains from falling and slipping on ice and snow. Following these tips will help you avoid injury this season:

  • Slow down. Allow extra time to get where you are going.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for ice on steps, sidewalks, and pathways, and be careful stepping on and off of buses and into and out of cars.
  • Wear proper footwear. Avoid high-heeled shoes or boots. Instead, wear shoes with flat, slip-resistant soles. Wearing rain or snow boots will also provide you with more traction.
  • Adjust the way you walk. “Taking short, flat steps and keeping your heels and soles in contact with the ground as long as possible will help you remain balanced in snowy or icy conditions,” explains Dr. Clay D. Miller, pain management doctor at Sports Medicine North. “Walking with your feet angling slightly outward will also provide increased stability.”
  • Remove your shoes or boots once inside. The melted ice on the bottom of your shoes can result in a slippery surface, even when you are indoors.

If you sustain an injury due to a slip or fall, call (978) 309-3066 to make an appointment with one of the doctors at Sports Medicine North. For more health, wellness, and injury prevention tips, “like” Sports Medicine North on Facebook or follow @SportsMedNorth on Twitter.
