Staying Safe on the Farm

Agricultural machinery uses power, motion, and energy to perform work and increase efficiency on a farm. Regardless of how machines are powered, they can cause several hazards to those working with them. It’s important to operate farm machinery safely at all times.

“People who operate farm machinery need to be aware of all the potential hazards these machines present,” Dr. Gary G. Doss, orthopedic specialist at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron says. “Not following the necessary safety guidelines could result in a major injury and several weeks of recovery time.”

If you’re using farm machinery for the first time, study the operator’s manual before operating the machine. Also, learn the potential hazards and work proactively to avoid dangerous situations. In general, do not wear loose, baggy clothing, and keep long hair pulled back to avoid entanglement.

You can also be instrumental in protecting other people from a dangerous situation near farm machinery. Make sure employees understand how to operate equipment correctly, and teach all family members and employees about the hazards involved with agricultural machinery. Finally, keep children away from farming equipment, regardless of whether it is running or idle.
