Is Anterior Hip Replacement Right For You?

For patients who suffer from hip arthritis, an anterior hip replacement may be the best method for relieving pain and improving mobility.

This hip replacement technique uses an anterior approach, which is a minimally invasive alternative approach to traditional total hip replacement. Using an anterior approach allows surgeons to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip as opposed to the back or side of the hip. This allows the hip to be replaced without the detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery.

“This approach allows us to work through the natural interval between a patient’s muscles,” says Dr. Scott M. Heithoff, joint replacement surgeon at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron. “Leaving the gluteal muscles that attach to the pelvis and femur undisturbed during surgery causes significantly less surgical trauma, resulting in a much shorter recovery process.”

Dr. Heithoff says the anterior approach has also been proven to reduce movement restrictions and provide patients with shorter hospital stays and less pain than a traditional hip replacement.
