What Is Bursitis?

Bursitis is defined as an inflammation of a bursa, which is a fibrous sac filled with a lubricant called synovial fluid. Working to reduce friction at high pressure points between tendons, skin, and bones, the bursas give healthy joints a smooth, gliding range of motion.

An inflamed bursa in the shoulder or elbow joints is often the result of a direct blow to the area. It may also be caused by overuse of structures that are weak or imbalanced. Bursitis can also occur in the hip and knee joints.

“If you’re suffering from bursitis, you will notice symptoms of joint pain, decreased motion within your affected joint, swelling, tenderness, and warmth surrounding your joint, and decreased joint function,” explains Dr. Rajesh B. Makim, sports medicine doctor at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron.

Treatment for bursitis may include a period of rest and ice as well as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Your doctor may also recommend a cortisone injection, which will reduce inflammation, pain, and lack of function in the affected joint. Performing strengthening and stretching exercises with a physical therapist can also help you restore musculoskeletal balance in your affected joint to reduce your risk of future injury.
