Hip Replacements Becoming More Durable

A recent study released from The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery shares that recent hip replacement implant designs are more durable than before, even after hip revisions.

Cementless metal cup implants allow the patient’s bone to grow within the cup and remain fixed in place—even 20 years after the revision hip replacement—in nearly 95 percent of cases.

Using X-rays, researchers found only four loose cups in 138 patients. Additionally, they studied 73 more patients living with their implants 20 years later. In doing so, they determined that out of 77 replacements and 21 who underwent surgical revisions, only one loose cup was identified.

Although, there was an increase in repeat, or revision, surgeries as a result of wear-and-tear, two main causes were infection and recurrent dislocations.
