XIAFLEX Treatment Leading the Way for Dupuytren’s Contracture
Dupuytren’s contracture is a debilitating disease characterized by hard, rope-like cords, which form across a patient’s palm and fingers, preventing normal hand function.
“Over time, the cords cause the fingers to pull inward, so patients can no longer straighten their fingers or lay their hand flat,” explains Dr. Heather A. Campion, hand surgeon at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.
In the past, patients who suffered from Dupuytren’s contracture could only undergo an open surgical fasciectomy to remove the cords, requiring a lengthy post-operative recovery. Now, however, patients are feeling relief much more quickly with less invasive treatment using XIAFLEX, which is an injection that “melts” the cords away. This nonsurgical treatment method restores patients’ hand function and mobility quickly and safely.
Depending on a patient’s specific disease pattern, a doctor may recommend releasing the cord with a needle instead of with XIAFLEX. This procedure, needle fasciotomy, is also successful in restoring hand function and mobility.
